Pastries - Chouquettes

These are simple pastries easy to do at home. When seeing them in the bakeries I thought the contrary but (be sure I'm bad on cooking) I cooked them easily for the second time this weekend and they did not last one day.
The chouquettes look like small bread balls with nice sugar bits on them (picture to come).
If you want to have Paris at home, you just need eggs, water, sugar, salt and butter I took the recipe on the web (French version).

On the Parisian places I really love you can get to place Felix Eboué, Metro Daumesnil (line 6 and 8). There is a magnificent fountain with Lyons, the ambience is really French. Twice à week, you will find an open market with fresh products, fishmonger, fruit stand... And until the end of January you can also enjoy illuminations.
Near this square you can also get Bastille (line 8).

I just wanted to see this exhibition and could not find time for it. When at least got there found a waiting line, but finally I get in about 10min later. Hope it will be really good...

Inside the wait is still long! 10 extra min and nothing to see! Just think about living the exhibition and I decide to jump the line to have a look on some drawings. This magnificent work is first shown inside of small windows which are all installed along a wall, so to see them all you must wait in line… I could not wait! So I just saw some of them and could have a fast glance to this Parisian ambience with the views on the small parks, and streets what a great work. I really love Sempé drawings…

After the “first room” no more waits, there are several groups of drawing organized by publication so you can see the American review for which the artist worked.

It’s a great job, it’s beautiful, and it’s all in one good to laugh and poetic. But if you do not want to wait you can just buy one of his books or the exhibition catalogue that should be just ok!

The 104 (Centquatre) is an unique cultural place in Paris . The building is first of all huge and splendid and allows to receive several stages, a library and of course a restaurant. Therefore after the spiritual and cultural foods nothing of such as to try earth food. And definitely, at4pm, the restaurant serves as well plancha of charcuterie as waffles! Anything to satisfy all tastes. And on top of that, my chocolate waffle was excellent. Therefore before or after the visit of the place, you will be sure to find a good restaurant.

Entrepot' s deserves! Having walking up a good part of the street of Ménilmontant, we finally arrive at Entrepot' s, nice and convivial place. The atmosphere looks like a bric-à-brac trades, what gives the aspect of a bazard which is in finale very successful. Service is nice, without more but we eat well and for inexpensive cost : a menu at 13 €, it is rare in Paris! Then if you are in this district of Paris, take a chance, you will not be disappointed.

We of course tried a thieb, a Senegalese speciality and it was amazing. Moreover I was agreeably surprised by the dessert. On Tuesday November 22nd we assisted to an excellent concert given at Saint Sulpice church (Paris 06) “La Grande Messe en Ut mineur” (Mozart). There were almost a hundred of choir members, 4 soloist singers all under the direction of Henry Didot. An evening plenty of emotion! A moment of real pleasure!

And it was even better as the Saint Sulpice church restoration-works are finished and we could appreciate its majestic architecture.

If you want to appreciate a concert in a French church you can go to Saint Roch church (Paris 01) where this concert will be given a second time on November 25nd and 29th. Entrance fare : 25€.

Restaurant Rollet Paradier - Traiteur

As there are quite fiew restaurants near Assemblée Nationale we finally arrived at Rollet Pradier Restaurant which is located just behind the building. In fact Rollet Pradier is a Traiteur, but they have this restaurant at the first floor of the building.

It’s a quite small restaurant, but we did not have to wait and could seat. The decoration in white colors made us feel more relaxed. The waiting is a bit long but the waiters were all very polite and nice and the food (also expensive) is so delicious that you forget the rest.

They sell mostly meat dishes and in French gastronomy style. I do not like meat a lot but when it is as well prepared as in this place I can finish my plate without problem! We had 2 dishes for two “Assiette Anglaise” (English plate) which was composed of different slices of meat including roastbeef and ham, on a salad leave with mayonnaise. We liked the meat but we realy preferred the “Blanquette de Veau et tagliatelles” (Veal meat with sauce and pasta) which was delicious, I loved the sauce and the meat that melted on the mouth, everything perfectly salted nothing to add!

I don’t know if it is the waiting or the meat so well served but at the end we couldn’t order a dessert and I can tell you their desserts and pastries are delicious!

If you are on Assemblée Nationale District (and have time for lunch) go to this place and you won’t be disappointed!

To be honest, the view is not great as there are some works in front of the restaurant. But it is located in the heart of Paris and the waitress is very nice and very dedicated to her job, that’s why I went there many times. Downstairs, there is a lounge if you want to receive your colleagues, friends, etc, etc. The food was delicious, worldwilde cuisine as the Mojitos. So if you are near the Halles area, you can try this restaurant, it’s worth it.

The Palace of Versailles

We booked a Guided Tour with the palace of Versailles. These tours are only in French and English but we took it because it is the only way to visit the private apartments of the King and have a chance to see the Opera Royal. Our wish was exhausted: we entered that magnificent Opera built in two years for the wedding of the grandson of Louis XV (the future Louis XVI) with Marie-Antoinette. To know about this place and its secrets I really recommend you this tour. After it we could visit by ourselves the rest of the palace (places everyone can see): the history museum, the State Apartments of the King, an exhibition about the furniture that is on currently. The entrance to the palace (state apartments and museum) is 15€ per person, the guided tour cost us 16€, one euro more to see much more! Moreover, the state apartments seem less interesting without a guide (we had the headsets), they are lively and answer to your questions…

Warnings!
1) When booking (on Versailles official website) be sure you print your tickets, and when arriving to the guided tour entrance go exchange them. The hostess at the entrance aren’t always aware about how it works ask if everything is ok before the tour starts.
2) It is forbidden to enter food and big umbrellas to the palace. Request where you can leave them before the tour. The guide won’t have time to wait for you.
3)There are no toilets in the apartments, go to the toilets before the tour.

GIACOMETTI ET LES ETRUSQUES

This exhibition is really attractive, I arrived there by 10:30am and half an hour later it was full!
It is well explained in French and English, one can learn lots about the Etruscan Civilization which is shown principally on the first floor. There are precious pieces, really beautiful, everything well organized to help the visitor to understand.

When going downstairs we find Giacometti works in parallel with some Etruscan statues and objects among which some really thin statues. In this ground we learn that the artist was interested by all types of art (African, byzantine, Egiptian…) and as used to draw on the art-books and catalogs about exhibitions happening everywhere…
It is really interesting but I think the link between the artist and the Etruscans is not as pregnant it is told. There isn’t much of light in the rooms but may be it is to take care about the works. But if you want to discover Etruscan Art go to this place it is great.
The Pinacothèque de Paris is a huge institution with a permanent collection to be seen. There are several exhibition at this moment to have more information visit the website

Having moved to another hotel and a new quarter, I do a duty to discover the addresses of my new arrondissement. And to begin, I chose for the restaurant the one which is closest to the hotel: A L’AFFICHE. It cannot can’t be nearer as it is fair on the opposite side of the street. Held by 2 friends enthralled by their job, atmosphere and fresh products are their real leitmotiv. With 17 - 33-€ menus, you have it as all tastes and all grants. In brief, run to this restaurant, it is a true culinary delight.

Nice and long stroll from Saint Lazare train Station to Concorde Square
Even in autumn with the gray days we can love Paris !

And when I am with friends, we can go for walks crossing the city without even noticing it !
We started at Saint-Lazare walking to the Opera thinking to do some shopping before going to a coffee place. We passed the Passage du Havre that used to be nicer some time before, and walked fast to the Printemps. I was impressed by the beauty and luxury of the shops (I haven’t been to this place since long time) and was glad to discover the paying loo as I had seen it on TV… Then we stopped the shopping and decided to get to Madeleine Square passing through Vendome Square which is beautiful.
It is really a magestic place and strolling around I recognize the suns on the balconies and realize that this place was made for Louis the XIV !! The Sun-king. I am usually thinking about the column on the middle made under Napoleon I and forget the rest of the buildings. Then we walked along the Saint Honoré Street having a look to the luxury and funny shops on that street. Saint Honoré Street is where you can find Hermès among other luxury shops but we did not walk until there. Arriving to Madeleine, we start discussing about where to stop for the coffee:
- We could go to Ladurée and have some delicious Macarrons,
- Yes but first shall we go have a look to Fauchon ? Oh look at Maille shop (The mustrard shop window is very nice).
- That would be nice if we have a tour at the Pinacothèque…
- Of course but could you wait for me I would like to go to Sephora….
Finally, we strolled around all Madeleine square admiring Hediard restaurant and shop which is beautifully arranged inside, as well as Baccara and went nowhere. As we were getting cold and tired we decided to take the metro to Champs Elysées Clemenceau (we could have walked in fact) and have a coffee at the Petit Palais. This magnificent small construction built for the 1900 exhibition as a pendant to the Grand Palais houses a small coffee place with a view on the magnificent garden. And the coffee is not very expensive there, we all paid around 3.5€ for a hot drink Capuccino, Tea, Chocolate. It is not too bad.
The coffee gave us enough strength to continue the stroll: we had a fast look to the Petit Palais (entrance is free) and then walked to the bridge Pont Alexandre III with a view on the Invalides… From there you have a nice view on the Eiffel Tower. It was time to get back to our places and as my bus (24) stops at Concorde I decided to walk there admiring the view on the Eiffel Tower and the Pont Alexandre III ! Paris is beautiful plenty of history and we never stop discovering it again and again!

Located 5 minutes walking from the hotel Berne Opera, Un bistrot en ville has a big terrace which is unfortunately often overcrowded, it is hard to have a place unless having reserved. Liking lunching outside, I was convinced that for lunch there would be some room. Error, it is worse than in the evening. Happily, inside is very clear thanks to its huge windows. I ate delicious chicken fajitas (13.80 euros). Service is flawless and good-natured ambience. Therefore do not hesitate to go there. On top of that, its really 5 min from hotel Berne Opera.

In this pizzeria where you can taste pizzas cooked in a woodfired oven, we decided to taste a roasted chicken with chips ( 10 euros) and a plate of pasta and its 2 salmons (13 euros). Dishes were copious but I found the smoked salmon too salty. The atmosphere area, the service and the welcome were quite good in this tourist district. I recommend the room situated in the 1st the floor.

Outside or inside, I did not hesitate to settle down in front of place du Tertre (Montmartre). Even if we were on a really touristic site I have to admit I have been pleasantly surprised by the welcome of the waiter. We tasted a veal cutlet (17,50 euros) with chips. The plate was copious and very good even if the dish was little expensive. You will need 6, 60 euro for ½ vittel and 3,10 euros for a coffee(café). Although the amount of the invoice is a little raised, I recommend this address on the extraordinary place. Last point important for this address, toilet were very clean.

On Sunday I decided to go to Centre Georges Pompidou, when arriving I realized we where on the first sunday of the month and that entrance to the museum was free. I was quite astonished to see there was no waiting to go to the museum. But after thinking a wile i deduced it is because this place is huge and people get dispatched in different places according to their interest. There is waiting at the interactive rooms for example at the photo center but for the main exhibiton no line at all. Happy about making economies, I climbed the electric stairs discovering the magnificent view on Paris. Once in the exhibition rooms one can sometimes have a view on Montmartre or Notre Dame and the restaurant bar at the top is ideal for this. Even if it's expensive I had great pleasure drinking my orange juice in front of Saint Eustache admiring also the place very trendy with a red rose on the table.

Located right behind Georges Pompidou centre, this small restaurant is a true nugget. Mixture of design, baroque and mind-expanding, it is difficult to describe it. Anyway, it is a very good place for a brunch. There is to drink and to eat: sweet,
savoury food, crêpes, eggs, salads, in brief, the buffet is hudge. The atmosphere is busy and mirror balls make us forget that we are on Sunday afternoon!!! It is necessary to reserve; there are 3 services of brunch: 11h-12h30 and 14 h 30. Afterwards, nothing of such as a digestive promenade on quays closed in the circulation and we arrive at the feet of Louvre and its pyramid. This it is Paris!

This small corner of paradise, located near to Gare de Lyon train station, under one of the arcades of the Viaduct of Arts, looks like an English garden. It is very warm-hearted, with its old stones, very bright, decoration is simple and from good taste. In brief, we feel very comfortable. I opted for a brunch while my friends took dishes which are delightful and very much abounding. Concerning the brunch, tartines, scrambled eggs, potatoes, cheese, fruit salad. etc, I loved. Good presentation and very well served. To be kept on your address book, for sure.

REIMS CATHEDRAL ANNIVERSARY

I passed a week-end to Reims and discovered that THIS YEAR IT IS THE CATHEDRAL 800th ANNIVERSARY.
Reims Cathedral is very important in French history. Kings used to be crowned there (not all the kings) so if you come to France may be you could spend a day in Reims. Especially if you come between May and October as there will be many events for the anniversary.

So here is what you could do during your day to Reims:
Departure early in the morning (really early), around 8:50 am from Paris Gare de l’Est.
From Reims Train Station, take rue Colonel Driant until rue de Thiers which leads to the Hotel de Ville square. In front of the City Council (Hotel de Ville) you have a nice view on the Place Royale through rue Colbert.

Then take rue du Cloître to the Cathedral. If you compare it with Paris Cathedral, it seems really bigger and sober: There are fewer decorations and as the glass windows were broken during the war some are modern but less colorful (but there are also Chagall glass windows!). You started your tour day!

You can assist to the shows given between May and October 2011 or visit the city.

Before starting your visit it may be better to rent audio guides at the Tourist Office which is located next to the cathedral. They may give you the precious information I could not get about history or architecture. One can read some explanations written in French sometimes in English and German. But not everything is well explained! We were very lucky getting a French guide when entering to the Palais du Thau, he was really good and we got good knowledge to make a tour of the city after. You can also visit the Tourist Office Web where they suggest a guided tour from April to August for example. Their contact are really good answering to all questions.

Beside the Cathedral, the Palais du Thau is very important for the Kings Crowning Ceremony. And you will discover the real size of the statues that seem so tiny at the front of the Cathedral. After that you can go to the restaurants at the walking zone (which is interesting also for the buildings architecture) specially at Place Drouet d’Erlon.

After lunch the buses (lines A or F) will drive you to Saint Remi’s church and its monastery. There one can also discover the history of Reims and its surroundings. I found it quite interesting but not really well explained.

Your main regret will be the return to Paris: last train is before 8pm which is too early to see the Cathedral marvelous enlightening at this period of the year...

Everyone knows Reims for Champagne. It is really a nice city full of history. Plenty of monuments but getting modern infrastructures (there will be a Tram within few days!!!). It is really a beautiful French city not to be missed.

FRENCH PASTRIES

Crèpes,

There are lots of persons that when coming to Paris want to try the crêpes.

Personally I don’t really prefer the “Real buckwheat Crêpes”, and if I have one it will be a salty one (ham and cheese for example), so I did not try to make them at home. If you want to try one, you can read the message of Valérie or Geraldine who talk about good restaurants (label Paris-crepes).

So as we love crêpes at home I had to learn how to do them and it is really simple! It is like a pancake recipe without yeast. I always melt first little milk (less than 1/2littre) with 3 eggs and then add flour (2 or 3 cups), salt and melted butter (a small spoon of it). If we want sweat crepes I add some vanilla sugar.
I see if it is liquid enough and add milk or flour according to my needs. Then I leave it for 15 minutes (recipes say more, but I’m not patient enough), and start trying the first one in a really hot pain where I passed a small paper with few butter. I sometimes miss my first crêpe. But then they are all ok.
I really believe that crêpes recipe changes according to one’s taste. At Grands-Boulevards station (line 8 or 9) they sell thick crêpes, personally I prefer them thinner.
My favorite crêpe is the sugar one (just few sugar inside). But you can add chocolate, marmalade, almonds, honey, chestnut…

When coming to Paris don’t miss the Marais. It is one of the nicest districts of Paris. There you will discover history, art, architecture, shopping…
Take your time and enter the court yards where you will find nice shops that seem hidden in a private world. For example at 8, rue des Francs Bourgeois (75003 Paris) there is a nice courtyard with with a haberdashery and the Photo-Gallery YellowKorner.

To go to the Marais, you can get of at metro staion Chemin-Vert (line 8) and Saint-Paul (line 1).

It is the third time i have lunch at le bourbon. Food is just ok (nothing excellent), but the place seems welcoming and very Parisian. Moreover we felt cramped for room. When the wether is good it is better to take a table outside, you have a nice view on the square and the National Assembly.
The service is not really fast, but they are nice and helpful.
Main dish is about 15€.

Located within the theatre of the Rond Point, this restaurant is ideal before going to see one of the shows. Reservation is hard recommended to avoid waiting and to be sure of having a table because the restaurant is pretty small.
Service is quick and efficient. I was a bit disappointed by my risotto of St Jacques and Gambas (seafoods were very good but the rice had nothing special). On the contrary, I liked the chocolate cake. Ambience is rather convivial and nervous. The waiters do not stop running but they are very courteous and nice.

As the manager who received us was nice and smiling, as our maitre of hotel was unfriendly.
Concerning the cuisine, I took bulots and shrimps. I was disappointed enough because bulots was tough, tasteless, what is amazing for a brasserie specialized in sea food. For dessert, I took one classic: a floating island. Nothing too bad but not extraordinary either. For sure, I won’t go back.

Montmarte street is a really good place for good restaurants.. Open till 6 am, this restaurant does not empty and the really frenchy cuisine (kidneys, foot of the pork, blood sausages.) is in adequacy with the relaxed and typically Parisian atmosphere.
Waiters are efficient and nice and the cuisine is as high as the rest: Generous, very good and so French. I really liked kidneys and the tarte Tatin. Therefore in your discovery of Montmarte Street, do not hesitate to wait a little bit when they find you a place, you will not be disappointed.

Attention: extraordinary! Located on the street Montmartre, this tiny restaurant is a really a discovery. With 20 seatings, we shared the wall seat with an american couple who was very nice. The atmosphere is incredible thanks to the boss, yellow pantsl and white beard (is he Santa Claus’ brother ?), good shape despite his 73 years old, and the waiter, not an young person either but so nice.
On top of that, the meat was tasty and the mousse of chocolate was terrific. Do not hesitate to go and discover this restaurant but it is necessary to be lucky to have a table.

Located in a very small street, away from noise and circulation, La Grande Ourse is however worth to go. If decoration is purified and a bit cold to my taste, the kitchen is delightful and very fine. The wife of the chief welcomed us, she is very nice and taking time to explain us dishes. We had the chance to be able to discuss with the chief at the end of meal and we really felt his passion for the kitchen.
This type of restaurant where the chief is so emphasized is rarest and rarest, that's why you should not hesitate to push the door of La Grande Ourse.

If you are tired with the traditional French restaurant, you can try this small Argentinean place. This restaurant is within 5-7 minutes walk from the hotel des nations saint germain, rue cardinal-lemoine, almost next door from the cabaret “Le Paradis Latin”. Of course as an Argentinean restaurant, their specialities are meat, and I must say that I was not disappointed by the quality. I took the lamb and it was well cooked, very tender as was the beef of my wife. It was accompanied with corn mashed which is quite different from the potatoes mashed I am used to but overall it was very good. Also the red wine was exceptional.
The service was really nice and professional. The atmosphere cheerful with of course some Tango as backside music.
Regard the prices; I will say it is in the average in Paris. Unfortunately they do not propose menus, it is only “A la carte”, for two persons we spent 90€ for starter, main dish and desert, with wine included also (24€).

For my 8 month late Christmas gift my busy sister invited me to Paradis du Fruit (fruit paradise) located at Bastille.

I had a bad impression of the brand since at Creteil Soleil comercial centre I had bad welcome but also for the expensive prices they apply to their juices. But this time it was different.

You should count around 14euros for a main dish well served. I had a Makmaskol for 12.90 euros at first view it looked good, for smell it is also good and for taste it was Really Good! The desserts cost around 8 euros I had an Aphrodite for 8.90 euros. It was good but not extra!
Also service was good.

I was a little surprised by entering by seeing the executive with regard to the outside. I have tested a “crêpe” ham / cheese / eggs at the 7-euro price with 33cl of dry cider at the 4-euro price. The pate of the “crêpe” was not very cooked but it was furnished well. I continued with a chocolate-brown crepe almond at the 6-euro price. I was too greedy because I was not able to end it. In fact I thought that it was about almond fringe and not of powder of almond. Things being what they are, the service and the welcome were very pleasant.

I wanted to go to the Louvre Museum on July 14th but the line quickly got me discouraged then I decided to walk along the Seine in the direction of “Notre-Dame”. I thus continued on Rivoli street to take on the right the banks of the Seine quickly. Regrettably the secondhand booksellers in border of the Seine were not opened (green boxes along the Seine River). I thus have pursued my stroll along the Seine to arrive finally at Notre-Dame Cathedral. There was again the line but it quickly decreased. I thus took the line to enter after 5 minutes only the cathedral of “Notre Dame”. Then I was able to rediscover the beauty of stained glasses and the architecture of the Cathedral. By going out, it was cold a little bit then before returning me towards the Saint Louis Island I made a small stopping place to warm myself in the bar and restaurant Esmeralda.
Having made the tour of the Saint Louis Island, I come back by the road of Notre-Dame to take the RER C at the level of Saint Michel.

The restaurant FUXIA is an excellent Italian restaurant with other things on the card than pasta and pizzas. This changes!!!! For my part, I took antipasti Fuxia (vegetables were grilled and marinaded in the olive oil accompanied with Italian charcuterie). So delicious. For dessert, an icecream with limoncello Do not forget the delightful effervescent red wine: the lambrusco. Ideal to start the week end.

Without knowing the address previously I was attracted by the decor, soft lighting, armchair, wooden table. I ate buckwheat crepe with salmon and cream, then a sweet crepe with chocolate and coconut, and drank two bowls of cider for 22.80 euros. The young waitress did the balance, her kindness weighed in front of the thin buckwheat crepe that had the name but not the taste. Review: not as good as I thought.

Please don't take this review for all restaurants of the same chain. We can never know as each restaurant is managed by a different person.
But the Croissanterie of Boulevard Saint Germain is a place you should avoid.
At the first look you have a restaurant with old but not too bad decoration. But food is expensive for what they sell. I paid 4.20 for a Minutemaid and a lemon meringue pie (Tarte au Citron). I really love la lemon meringue pie, and most of the times I go to the bakery I choose them even if they are more expensive than other pastries. But this one wasn't good at all. I couldn't finish it.
Then I tried the toilets. There was only one place for ladies and gentlemen also it was dirty, water on the floor and all around the sink.
I am sure that you will find better places around. There is one bakery on Jacob street near St Germain church, you can take there your French pastries and eat them at Square Laurent Prache. At same street La Durée is may be more expensive but much best.

We saw a small document on TV about Albert Khan and his works for photography. So we decided to go there just after lunch. We took the good decision as when going out there was a long waiting line.
The exhibition seems interesting but everything is in French. We did not look the permanent exhibition so we can not even say if there is one. We preferred to go to the gardens. It is really nice landscape (with examples of gardens from the world). We loved the Japanese garden.
We did not have time to visit all the gardens but we will go back there it only cost 1.5€!
I really thing that the gardens are good idea for a ballad if you have some extra time free!!

An excellent week-end at the Loire Valley

« Waste a day at the Loire Valley when visiting Paris ? No way…” This is what I used to say before last week-end.
If you are staying one week or more in Paris, do not miss the Loire Valley, it is a very good choice!

We leaved Paris Saturday afternoon and had time to visit 3 castles during 2 days: Chambord, Chenonceau, and Amboise (half day per place).

What can I say about the castles? Well, there are no words to describe their beauty. It is a must do in France. The landscapes are also marvellous.
My favourite? Chambord, thanks to the marvellous guide we had.
Also people are helpful and reserved us a very nice welcome there.

Something is sure: If you go there by your self you must prepare well your days. You will have to rent a car, wake up early, prepare your routes in order to have nice landscapes and count lots of money (it is expensive).

You can also take a guided tour with Cityrama, VisitFrance…

And of course have a great visit!

I am thinking about going back there for one week but in one or two years during summer… That is the privilege about living in Paris…

It is a really small chateau. When arriving there we were disappointed. Compared to Chambord is like a small house compared to a big building. But after the visit we came to the conclusion that both are very interesting. Chenonceau is plenty of tales about Diane de Poitiers, Catherine de Medicis…
Also it is better to visit on summer and spend half day there for the gardens and surroundings.

Built for François 1er. Count 2 or 3hrs for the castle and few more for the surroundings as it is very nice seen from the out side.
The castle is really cold during winter.
We took a French speaking guide and she explained us lots of things about this place: The history and the true-false links with Leonard de Vinci. We were also told that lots of decoration is similar reconstitutions and not the real furniture that was there at the 16th c.*. We loved the visit. The stairs are really funny. The castle is plenty of French history and recalls to François 1er.
There is video explaining the chateau (subtiteled in English) it is also interesting.

*She explained to us that the Kings court used to travel and the furniture travelled with them. So the places used to be empty for a while.

The Château is open all year round except on New Year’s Day, 11 november and Christmas Day.

Restaurant open for over a century with vocation to become a canteen. The prices are very reasonable. It’s good, it's like at home. I took the menu at 22 euros : As starter tomatoes mozzarella bufalla. Then the beef tongue and mash potatoes housemaid and for dessert a very vanilla-tasty vanilla ice. For drink I had sparkling water at 3 euros.
There are the specialties of the house written in marker on white Venetian mirrors, wooden furniture, and water glasses that bring us back to childhood when we used to ask our friend "how old are you?" and read the answer at the bottom of the glass. The answer is still there.
In addition staff proves to be careful.

I went to visit the last house occupied by the painter. Attention, access to apartments is via a steep staircase. The visit did not take much time, after a few drawings and paintings and his studio already the way out. I stayed a little about my hunger for my taste there was not enough work of the great master to admire however there are long streamers explanatory work and a plan for the city of Paris that gives direction murals and other paintings.

Admission is 5 euros. Closed Tuesdays.

This Gourmet restaurant has about thirty seats and offers very good quality products cooked simply.
You must go visit their extensive website and then call to reserve.
I took the menu at 35 euros starting with the duck foie gras (delicious!) then I ate kidneys with mustard sauce, and finally for dessert, the giant profiterole with vanilla ice cream and homemade hot chocolate.

A true classic for the general idea that we can have about French catering. For me the most pleasant about Guy Tardif cooking is the variety of food that make each of his dishes.
I ate a starter, Cassoulet of snails from Burgundy with Tardis beans and sauteed mushrooms. Then I had a main-course, pikeperch watercress sauce and green vegetables.
The Menu is 25 euros.
The bad is that after eating it, there is no more space for a real dessert. So I had a coffee which comes with its little cakes (5 euros). The wine list is impressive in its size and price.
I finished the evening with this idea; I always come to be happy after a good meal.

Next to The museum of Medium Age, we ate in a sensational restaurant: Le Pré Verre. Nicely decorated, the restaurant has 2 rooms among which one is downstairs where we had lunch because the room of the top was already full.
With a 28.50 € entrée-plat-dessert menu, we really enjoyed. Very fine, abounding, original, tasty, it is really an address to be kept and a restaurant to be discovered. Reservation recommended.

Researching a nice restaurant at rue des Canettes, we found the pizzeria LE POSITANO. Small restaurant of about twenty places, space between tables is not so big but at least we are warm! The bosses, who look after the service, are very nice and warm-hearted and find us a table fast. I took pasta and one Pana cotta. There’s nothing to say against. It was very good and abounding.
But if you really want to go there, it is necessary to reserve because it was overcrowded.

It is a small restaurant in the Bastille quarter where I use to go for its traditional cuisine. As I know about their dishes I highly recommend the gourmet salads. But this time I put my cutlery in the tender tab beef with sweet potatoes enhanced with fried mushrooms, price 13.50 euros. Half bottle Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil 13.50 euros and then the digestive Manzana Verde 6 euros. It is a friendly place where the tables are close to one another and the voices sound, perfect for an evening with friends.

This pub opened for ages and provides continuous service 365 days a year. The framework is rather dark colour with red candles on the tables. The service is class and refined. A DJ takes care of the music.
But the glass of Bordeaux at 7.50 euros and the Caesar salad at 15 euros which is a simple bowl of salad with some frozen chicken slices lyophilized lead me to the obvious : Prices are really too high in this place!

At first, we just planned to eat a Chinese sea-food “fondue”. For that, we went to the restaurant China Town, right in the center of the Chinese quarter of Paris. Big room, typically Chinese decoration, numerous staff. In brief, everything took place well, the fondue was delightful and very light. There is two bouillons, a peppered, other one softer and we cook vegetables and seafoods there. And then here the karaoké began!!! Me who sings only under my shower, and with good reasons!!! Must push the ditty in front of customers who take the karaoké very seriously. An instant of shame being quickly past, I crossed the microphone to the Chinese customers who loved the karaoké and this agrees, they all sing very well, them!

I was fortunate to discover this little restaurant where the hostess served us typical Catalan dishes.
Food is housemaid like aioli sauce, bread crumbs… A real festival for your taste buds!
I ate Sepias a la Plancha (mushrums), Calamares a la romana (calamari) and Lemon tart (total EUR 22.50)
I also took a bottle of Sangre de toro red wine(21.00 euros). I would not fail to return.

I entered in this restaurant incidentally, I was first attracted by the musicians who have played this evening there. They were only 2 but they put a very much nice ambience which eclipsed all rest. The atmosphere was warm but service was not realy at the top really. We had to ask 2 or 3 times to have something to drink and eat.

In brief, it is really an address to be kept for live music but indeed not for quality of service.

Today Monday I'll find the Steam Bath of the Paris Mosque. I recommend consulting days available, some are reserved for women and others are exclusively for men. After having crossed the terrace I take the left door on which hangs a sign "Women only hammam”. After a small room I found the reception. I opt for the 38€ formula. For that price I have the right to access to the steamed room, soap, a scrub, a massage of 10 minutes, a tea. The The steam bath is composed of 3 large rooms. With common areas and places more quiet. After 1 hour under steam I join a gloved lady who will work to make myself a makeover. Then I walk into the main room where I lay on benches sipping tea. I turn on the massage table, 10 minutes: is too short, but divine. Finally, I quit leaving me behind tension and toxins. The experience was positive overall, pity that the locker room does not completely hang of these cases also regrettable that the use of hair dryer self pay.

Located just a step away from the Porte Maillot, this nice restaurant is very well decorated. In the tones of grey, the decoration is discreet and good taste. Service is flawless and the food is delightful. I took a steak tartare prepared with French fries. Small reservation on the steak tartare: pricking was missing; they must have forgotten the famous sauce Worcestershire which makes all difference. For dessert, I really liked their apple crumble and bowl of salt caramel ice cream.

This is an address with no default. Ideally, the kitchen is open from morning until evening to prepare a dish chosen from the menu or composed by oneself. For my part I chosed the Goody-Woody: toasted bread topped with chicken curry with chips and a mixed salad (12.50 euros). Verdict: hearty and light to digest, tasty and fresh. This place specialties are the fruit cocktails. This restaurant has been recently re-decorated, it's just beautiful, soothing. The seats are ultra comfortable and the ceiling gives dreams. For info Le Paradis du Fruit likes Michael Jackson, we had his music all evening and a client suddenly raised to cross the room to Moonwalk!

Close to numerous theatres, Delaville Café is the ideal place to begin your friday evening. The restaurant is splendid, simple decoration but very "trendy" ( dilapidated ceiling, monumental stairs), the atmosphere is almost surrealist. There is a the side bar which privatized this evening and the restoring side. The card is composed of international dishes (burger, antipasti, etc, etc) in reasonable prices (15-20 € the dish and 6-7 € the dessert) ). I took a burger and I loved. The bread was loving, ventilated and crispy. On the contrary, for dessert, I took one pana cotta without a lot of taste.

Facing the oldest bridge in Paris there is a building at the foot of which you can find Kenzo Boutique and just after a huge glass door opens cordially giving access to two lifts. In this transparent cab I take the ascension to the fifth floor. I join a table in the middle of this scenery clean and Japanese-designed by Philippe Starck. I particularly like the customer thirty trendy and chic, techno music lounge and cocktail Kong :
The Caipiroska red fruit composed of vodka, lime, sugar, mashed red fruit (15 euros).
Too bad the staff are somewhat haughty. Not to be missed for any reason the restaurant on the sixth floor.

To be honest, I was not happy to have dinner in a restaurant which is called « Chez Lili et Marcel ». I told myself that it would be an old not very appetizing and seedy bistro. But when I arrived, my doubts flew off. Located at the corner of the quay of Austerlitz, this restaurant is rather big to accept big tables of a bit loud mates!!!! but offers also small quiet corners for couples. . . Decoration is splendid, with its hurdy-gurdies iron boardwalk of chocolat meunier or some bouillon Kub. Restoration is worthy of the name, generous, introduced well and rates are reasonable. Concerning the service, nothing to say, the team was very nice and professional. I have only one desire: go back to it.

Going out of an exhibition, I wanted to eat sushi! Unfortunately, it should not be the best quarter for it. We walked in front of a very nice Japanese restaurant where the first menu was 30 €, told myself, let' s go on. And there, on the street of Colisée, we saw a small Japanese restaurant. Happy to have finally found of where to restore, I got first disappointed because there was no sushi on the menu but soups!!! I will know it for next time, not all Japanese restaurants make sushis! In brief, curious to discover their soup, I took a 10.50 € menu and yes, I have been agreeably surprised. Steamed Raviolis were very light and perfumed. As for the soup, they have the choice of bouillon: (light) soya or (thick) miso. With noodles, pork and other vegetables. At this place One have the right to a delightful complete meal.

Wanting to drink a very fresh beer, we stopped in….. a bar à vin !!!!! It is necessary to say that the place is very nice, warm-hearted, the staff is kind and attentive and not at all surprised when we asked for a beer instead of a glass of wine. Located on the Place du marché Saint Honoré (it is really necessary to go to see it, it is a small place which is worth the detour and that I appreciate a lot), this bar à vin is worth to have a drink. Served with the sausage and with the radish (what else !), beers were very freshl, as we like.

Located in front of the Porte saint Martin and numerous theatres of the quarter, this Italian restaurant is an ideal starting point to have good diner before or after the nocturnal activities of this quarter. Decoration is warm-hearted with a vespa put down on the bar and the staff is very pleasant and attentive. As for the kitchen, nothing to repeat. Their pasta is very good and abounding. An advice really, the restaurant filled at about 22 h – 22h30 after the exit of theatres, it was impressive. Therefore, try to go a little there before to have a good table !

I haven't been to la Coupole for several years. I was a little suspicious at first, wondering if this restaurant does not live by its reputation. I therefore ordered the seafood plate.
The Coupole plate : ½ crab, 3 prawns, 12 oysters, 3 almonds, 3 Spanish mussels, whelks and 1 clam.
Price: 46,50 € on the card, but I paid 41.01 € with the application of reduced VAT.
Finally the balance of the evening was positive; the service is in the rules of art with special attention to women. My friends are regaled with the dinner menu and I with seafood. The bad point is the restaurant is quite noisy. A tip also, it is advisable to book this Saturday at 10pm we waited 30 minutes for a table.

Located five minutes walk from the Hotel des Nations Saint Germain, Paradis Latin is one of the oldest cabarets in Paris. So an advice for the amateurs: This is a mythical hall. The lobby is filled with celebrity pictures. The evening starts at 8.00 pm with a dinner that gives just enough to fill the stomach, however for the drinks there is all you need. The show starts at 9.30 pm for a 1h30 show not really dazzling but sometimes funny and quite traditional. I particularly enjoyed the champagne and French cancan.

L' Atelier is the simplified version of the Joel's Robuchon restaurant.
No reservations in advance! Just the day of the diner from 18h30, you must reserve for the evening! Easier when you know that for some restaurants you need to reserve weeks in advance!
Style is minimalist ! Japonese style, all black and red, soft lights, a big counter all around the kitchen from where you can watch your meals being prepared in the kitchen!
I took the discovery menu 9 courts/ small discovery portions. My favourites :

For all those great things you should pay around 150 to 170 euros per person!

The only bad point is for the toilets, which were quite dirty at the end of the day.... It doesn’t fit with the rest of the restaurant. What a pity !

This restaurant is located two minutes from the Place de la Bastille, the atmosphere is electro-fashion, the summer the large bay window opens onto the street. I had a delicious beef carpaccio with rocket salad, basil leaves and parmesan and chips. It will cost you about 30 euros per person for a main course, dessert and a drink.

This Chinese restaurant has 2 levels. The ground floor is reserved for clients ordering from the menu. The 1st floor is reserved for those who want the special menu to eat at will (seved as a Buffet).
We decided to go for the Menu.
Good points
There is a large choice of dishes from the entrance to the dessert (beef and onions, salads, icecream).
There is a microwave.

Bad points:
When going up we were wondering if we should stay as the floor sticks.
If you need to go to the toilets you may have to go back downstairs.
The microwave becomes soon a necessity as almost everything is cold.
The some small plates are so old that they’ve lost the decoration and took instead a brown colour.
The service is not the best
It is not so bad because it is to fight against wasted food. But I don’t really like to pay 2 € for each dish I did not eat (because I did not find it as good as it should).

Conclusion : I do not recommend this restaurant at least for its “special menu”.

Going to Park Astérix with Public Transport

I used at first the RER B (RAPID TRANSIT RAIL SYSTEM IN THE PARIS REGION) from Chatelet until the stop "Charles de Gaulle" terminal 1 (20 minutes).
At the exit of the station, you have a bus which bring you to Park Astérix entrance.
There is a bus every 30 minutes from 9:00 am untill 6:30 pm . It takes about 15 minutes to arrive to the Park.
It is a good way to go to the parc and it is easy. For the return trip, you make the same thing. The last bus is at 7:00 pm. The price of the round-trip ticket is reasonable (7.50 € for an adult and 5.5 € for a child.

Total fare round trip RER + BUS (from Paris ) : Adult 24.5 € Child 18.5 €

The palace of mirages is an extraordinary moment. The mythical attraction of the museum was completely renewed. The music and the lighting effects are fabulous. They transport us in a magnificent world.
Then we discover individually the wax characters. The celebrities are emphasized in decorations of their period. We find current artists and some of other times. I appreciated a lot the part dedicated to France history.
For a visit with children, I advise you to show them the web site of the museum before going there. Like this they will know who the present characters in the museum are.

The Orangerie was built under Napoléon III to house the orange trees from his garden during the winter season and since 1873, exhibitions are held.
Monet’s Waterlilies (Nymphéas) are presented according to the painter wishes, a total of eight panels of several meters exposed in two oval rooms to remind of the running hours. The visit continues with paintings, Renoir, Cezanne, Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Derain, Utrillo, Soutine.
The word museum is a bit misleading. It is an exhibition space of great interest. I advise to take the audio guide because the explanations are very comprehensive and if you are lucky enough and you arrive at the good time they may propose a guided tour to you.

After a long renovation period it opened to the public on March 2009 (see events blog). So we finally decided to go and see what it looks like…

First, prepare well your visit and don’t go there after 4 pm. The visit last about 1h30 (or more). So as we arrived around 5 pm, we couldn’t visit everything.

The museum is really to be heard as when you arrive there, they give you an audio-guide (English or French). Then go around typing your codes and hearing comments or instrument sounds. As I was with my sons I listened to both comments in French (adults and children) they were interesting.
Unfortunately every thing has an end and ours came too fast : around 5h45pm they kindly asked us to go out…

I just think I am lucky for living near Paris, so I can go back there and then I’ll tell you if this museum is really good to pay 8€ the visit...

This is a restaurant I really like. I have been there more than 3 times and it is always good!.
We also spend too much as we like everything and we never know what to choose. So we take too much.

I think our preferred are Onigiris : perfumed rice with cooked fish inside. And Chichachi Don : a big rice plate covered with 3 different fish. I also love their Wasabi because it has a light taste.
If you choose a menu remember it is accompanied with a small salad and a light soup.

If you take away the give you a small discount as many Japanese restaurants in Paris.

This restaurant is near Bastille square.

Those who love Organic food, will find some EXKI all around France.
I went with my sons to the one located at the 9th district near the Corona Opéra Hotel.
You go inside and serve your self : salads, sandwiches, soups, desserts, bread… For the soup you can add some croutons or cheese but you will have to pay an extra fare!
The soup had more a taste like the ready-ones you get at the supermarket. I expected more natural taste. The sandwiches were good but small. It seems after 5 pm you can get a reduction as the restaurant won’t sell them the next day. Desserts are good also…
Exki is not my preferred but if one day for lunch I pass near it I may choose it again.

Good address near Hotel Corna and Hotel Touraine Opéra.

It becomes a tradition: we always go to take away at Chevalier de Coeur.
We all agree: it’s good, balanced (always fruits and vegetables), varied and really fresh!!
It is like homemade but much better.
Also every day the chef, a passionately fond of cooking, welcomes us friendly!

Today's menu was :
Peas soup
Beef, potatoes and courgette au gratin
Fromage Blanc (like a very smoothy yoghourt ) with banana and kiwi.
We just payed 8.50 €

Our best note for : soups, hot or cold and desserts which are original and delicious such as Mousse de fraise, Chocolate and pear mousse, carrote-cake...
